Remember when you were taught about GOALS in school?

I started thinking about making some goals for this coming year about 3 weeks ago (and yes it was one of the blog topics on my mental and written list). I did a pretty good job of dreaming up a wonderfully large list of goals, so I’m glad I waited until now – after the first day of school - to actually write them down. Tomorrow I will conveniently be teaching my students about SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) goals, so I suppose it is perfect timing to write up my own. Here’s my abridged (I’m trying to widen my vocabulary J so let me know if I use the words incorrectly!!) list of goals. Unfortunately they may not be quite as detailed as the “SMART” goals I’ll be talking about tomorrow.

1. Consistently spend time reading my Bible and in prayer. I’m thinking my breakfast table is a pretty good time and place and that my alarm should be set earlier.

2. Work out at least 3-4 times a week. I bought a gym pass yesterday and plan on buying a bike this weekend. So far I’ve had conversations with a number of people who are into swimming, biking, running, floor hockey and soccer!!!

(I also think it would be an awesome experience to do the Great Wall Half-marathon May 21, 2011 BUT that’s not officially a goal yet!)

3. Remain connected with people at home. Plan: Skype and email family and friends at home weekly. (I am 15 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time) And Blog! J

4. Get connected with a church! I visited a church here on Sunday that I think I will attend. It will be a long commute (nearly 1.5 hours each way) and slightly outside my comfort zone, but I WANT to get connected with the community here outside of the school bubble and outside my own comfort zone.

Please ask me how I’m doing with these goals! I want to be deliberate and intentional because it’s often too easy to get consumed with school, work and such busyness. Maybe I should join my students in making a pretty little poster of my goals so I don’t forget J

What about you? What do you want from this year? Who do you want to be after it’s over? Maybe you should take nearly two hours to write something up like I have. Or maybe a pretty little poster instead? J

Hey Rachel - it's so neat that you are in China, after pursuing it for so long! It's cool to hear, too, that you are finding some things to be involved in and people to hang out with. I also commuted quite a while to go to church when I lived in Japan, but it was really an ongoing support that I needed. Going to church just makes you feel more at home, and it's great knowing that there really is a universal body of Christ worshipping all over the world! With all the emotional highs and lows of living in another country, it is good to have something that stabilizes you and encourages you in your faith. Best wishes for September!
