For those Canadians out there, today was our annual Terry Fox Run - YES we even have it in China!!! Classes let out early for our morning exercise break (usually the students do Tai-Chi) and students and teachers went to meet out on the basketball courts to begin the run. A good number of teachers, including myself, enjoyed a superb run, while most students did not actually run, but rather walked as slowly as possible (as people seem to do here quite often!) And when I say slow, I mean that by the time I got back (in 5th place!) about 10 minutes later, the last of the thousand + students were just leaving the gates to START! Slow or not, people got exercise and had fun doing it!
Today was FEAST FRIDAY in Office 321 (remember, the Best Office). I passed around a little reminder on Wednesday and even brought some of my own lunch for today because you can never know how an office potluck will work out. But I really shouldn't have underestimated the Best Office! For REAL! Again, I'm just going to brag and say once again that I have the best office hands down. We used our Mega Desk for our Feast which is conveniently behind a cupboard that we use to change behind from time to time (what can I say, PE teachers get sweaty!) and it worked really well because we were slightly hidden from any passerbys. We enjoyed many treats (once again including fresh bread from our office bread maker) and I could not stop eating.... I could still feel the full belly at about 6pm. We also pondered calling this event the "Finer Things Club" because at the same time a student orchestra was playing in the 4-floor circular entry way. So we stood at the balcony railings a floor above and nibbled on our tasty treats - how fine. (for those of you who enjoy the Office, I watched the first of this season online tonight and I laughed OUT LOUD! check it out!)
After school I had my first official club meeting for Outreach Club! And to make it even better, I convinced a couple girls from my more challenging Planning class to join - one took a little convincing though because she didn't want to go to the Boys campus and see any boys (cooties maybe?!?)! A good friend and I will be the teacher sponsors for the girls campus group who call themselves the Maple Leaf Angels (more girly I guess). It is really cool to hear about the great outreaches the students have done in the past and that they hope to do this year! It is a very cool group of kids and I am very excited to get to know them better outside the classroom! One of my PE students who frequently makes me smile and giggle inside is also in the club! Her English is pretty low and she has never played sports in her life (I had to physically help her actually do a badminton serve today) but she ALWAYS has a smile on her face and ALWAYS greets me in the hall in her childlike voice "HI teacher. Have a nice day! Bye teacher" Even if I ask her a question, she pretty much always answers either "Hi teacher" or "Bye teacher!" Hehe... I can't help but smile. So I am happy to see her in this club as well! At the end of our club meeting we played a little icebreaker game with the boys and girls together (shocking I know!) - and if you don't know me super well, I love organizing and playing these types of games! It was a good time and students just wanted to keep playing. And after the first few rounds, the boys and girls even started talking to each other!
A good day!
Tomorrow is Saturday AND we have to work - yes, school on a Saturday. But it can't be too bad because we have leftovers from today's Feast! Plus the next day we start a week of holidays and I am heading to Shanghai to hopefully see the Expo and EXPLORE!
Zaijian!
